The Family Pet Therapist.

Did you know having a family pet is great therapy & this pet could even be said to be a therapist in your home.

Interesting studies have found that pets have many benefits in the family.

We all know that children just love pets & this is obvious immediately when you walk into their rooms with stuffed toys, books & pictures of their favorite animal friends.  But this is not limited to children alone, as most of us bigger people, have some adorable family pet in our home.   cute_baby_pug_puppy_dog_on_purple_pacifier-r2748859245984d02a145976747b111a2_8byvd_8byvr_324

Like most pet owners we have the idea that having pets around would help teach our children responsibility, and maybe empathy. But we've also learned that the presence of animals in any house helps foster emotional, cognitive, social, and physical development. So this is a great therapy bonus.  And its been discovered there's plenty of solid evidence to back up these benefits of having a family pet.

With an estimated 4 in 10 children, that begin life in a family with domestic animals, and as many as 90 percent of all kids live with a pet at some point during their childhood, says Gail F. Melson, PhD, professor emeritus of developmental studies at Purdue University, in Indiana, and the author of Why the Wild Things Are: Animals in the Lives of Children.  But research is also finding more benefits by owning a family pet.

”People have always loved their pets, but now we're discovering specific ways to harness the benefits of being with an animal in psychotherapy,” said Dr. Samuel B. Ross, executive director of Green Chimneys Children's Services in Brewster, N.Y
Those who had the therapy with a pet improved on key areas of measurement like the ability to control their impulses and understand others, while those who received normal therapy got worse. The study was done by Barbara Wood, a clinical social worker at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.
